Children are naturally curious, so they enjoy learning about lots of things. Unfortunately, they can only really learn about the things that are real, or the things that elders show them. The age of the child is the most important determining factor here, because it relates to mental maturity. At three to six years old, the child will tend to take things at face value, so simple costumes are best. At seven to about 10 years old, he or she will know about the strong difference between fake and real, so props and the like can be introduced. At his point, you can employ fake gore or more realistic makeup. Beyond ten years old, they will have more individualized tastes that could translate into well-defined characters that they want to play as. Here, they may want to make their own choices.
Age also relates to growth, which will affect how you buy kids vampire costumes. If you only plan to let them wear it once, then pick out the best fit. If you want to have it on hand so they could put it on again within the next year or couple of years, then try to buy a costume that is bigger than what they should be wearing now.
