These days it seems that Halloween costumes can cost you an arm and a leg to buy, and only slightly less so to rent.  Vampire costumes are always popular, so cheap vampire costumes are pretty hard to find.   The ones that do go for reasonable prices are often of barely acceptable quality, so it may not seem like a good deal.  How does one go about getting their vampire costume without bleeding money?  With a little creativity, even a cheap costume can be transformed into something workable, or even stunning.

Here is a small tip: buy or rent a cheap vampire costume.  It should at least have a cloak or cape, fangs, and a vest.  The shirt and slacks are probably in your wardrobe already, so they should not put too much of a strain on your pocket.  So how do you transform something so flimsy into something that you can wear out?  Simply, you don’t, unless you have some good crafting skills.  For the less craft-oriented, simply wearing a layer of clothing underneath the costume will keep you warm if it’s cold out.

In the spirit of trick-or-treat, here is another trick that could lead to treats: keep an eye out for color quality.  Do not put the strength of the cloth and comfort on the top of your list of criteria, and instead put color depth in the number one spot.  Why?  A cheap vampire costume will only be worn for a few hours in one night, and you do not expect to be doing anything too physical, so comfort and durability are not paramount.  On the other hand, a costume with very good color saturation will look spectacular even if the material is actually flimsy.  Richer blacks, deeper reds, and purer whites will produce an incomparable Dracula look.  This color advice also applies to lady vampire costumes.

Of course, the right makeup will make even a cheap vampire costume so much better.  The idea is to look like you lack blood, so your skin should be pale.  The paleness should be even, to simulate that systemic lack of the red stuff.  A fair bit pale foundation needs to be applied, so if you are acne-prone, look for makeup that is non-comedogenic.  Of course, one must not forget to outline the eyebrows and eyelashes with some eyeliner.  Lastly, apply red lipstick for that bloodthirsty mystique.

Those who have more skills in the way of sewing have a serious advantage here.  First off, they can make the entire costume themselves, which should be more affordable than buying the premade ones.  The real advantage lies in the ability to make small alterations that will hold for at least one night.  With the right tucks and loosened portions, a cheap vampire costume can be given a tailor-made look that would fool the casual observer.  Of course, the best thing anyone can do to maximize a costume’s quality and even push beyond the limitations of the material is to act the part.  So choose a vampire personality to play, and let the night begin!
