Vampire costumes are particularly detailed outfits – perhaps the most detailed of all Halloween costumes, depending on the type you choose.  Now that may raise a few eyebrows; there’s more than one kind of vampire costume?  Aside from the obvious dichotomy of male and female vampire costumes, within each gender there are subtypes.  Vampires are favourites in pop culture, so it is no surprise that several varieties have developed as a result of reinvention and cultural changes.  The female vampire wannabe in particular has many choices, though they all should include the requisite vampiric fangs.

Let us start with the classic vampiress.  She could have a gown with a corset-like torso and flowing skirt, like a ballroom dress of long ago.  The gown or dress is often black or violet, though other dark colors are not out of the question.  Jewelry with Halloween motifs like bats, cats, magical symbols, and the like are excellent additions.  In fact, the only thing that would identify her as a vampire and not a noble lady is her skin color, and of course when she smiles.  With the right combination of snobbishness, illusions of lady-like manners, and underlying vampiric elements, you can be a real queen of the damned.

The primal vampire type is reminiscent of a wild beast that only cares about feeding off of humans.  Thus, a costume of this type could be anything with the condition that the clothes are ripped here and there, as if the wearer has been in fights or hunting like an animal.  This is one costume that works well if the wearer snarls and hisses a lot, all in character so to speak.  Claws for the hands are great, and if you could go barefoot, then it is all the better.  Get your hair greasy and messy and your face a little dirty, and you have yourself a beastly good costume.

One of the favorite female vampire costumes is the temptress type.  This features figure-hugging and skin-revealing pieces like corset tops and short skirts.  The idea is to create a costume that feeds the fires of lust; all to lure unwitting victims to their blood-drained doom.  Some common additions are high-heeled shoes, net stockings, and long gloves or arm warmers.  It is flirty and sexy, sure to grab a hold on more than a few hearts.  Or throats.

Another favorite is the dominatrix type, which is very similar to the temptress.  The main difference is that this type has a bit of a more dangerous feel to it.  Metal spikes, studs, maybe a prop whip, thigh-high boots, and a goodly amount of leather.  It is sexy yet intimidating.  This says “you can try me, but make sure you’re prepared to fall to my power”.

The best part about this is you can combine elements from these different types of vampires and create a vampire character and costume of your own.  You could be the modern vampire, dressed in contemporary clothes but in actuality you are a ravenous bloodsucker.  You could be the highborn lady who would like nothing more than to show a man a good time, right before sucking him dry.  A female vampire costume is easily customizable to fit the character you want to portray, and they will surely be smash hits.
